Senate Republicans voted Thursday to end the controversial policy of keeping transgender people from serving in the military.
The vote comes after President Donald Trump on Friday signed an executive order that would allow transgender people to serve openly in the armed forces.
The order also allows transgender people who are already in the US military to serve in the civilian workforce.
Trump announced last month that he would reverse the ban.
The decision, however, has drawn bipartisan criticism from some Democrats and a number of military leaders.
